The Dream of Lizbet
What in the world is a “Lizbet”? Lizbet is not an it. Lizbet is a name! In Pennslyvania Dutch, this is a nickname for Elizabeth. It so happens that this certain Lizbet is my mother-in-law, and also that she is an amazing cook.
My mother-in-law has had this dream for as long as I have known her. To publish her very own cookbook. After all, if one is the best Amish cook in the country, one should probably have their own cookbook! In April of 2007, she hailed her 6 daughters, all of whom cook just as good as herself, and they commenced to put on paper hundreds of recipes for the entire world to see. The good news is, you can buy it here and learn all their cooking secrets. The bad news…um…no…there is no bad news to this story! It’s all fine and dandy and may I add handy to make it all rhyme like a poem. 🙂
My Husband Has Six Sisters (True Story)
My husband is an amazing human being who survived being the youngest of a family of seven. All six of his siblings are females. There was/is, Martha, Ruby, Ina, Naomi, Linda and Dorothy. To clarify, if the air needs cleared, he grew up with six sisters and zero, zilch, nada, no brothers! It would be easy to judge Maynard (my husband) right then and there by just the last few lines, and start a rumor that he is one bratty, spoiled individual because of being the youngest and the only boy. I don’t know how, but it is totally the opposite. Maynard is the most giving, unselfish person I know. He is kind and caring. My Benny is so blessed to have this man as his sweet, hero, daddy friend.
I’m seeing a pattern here, because Benny has all female siblings, and he is also the youngest with no brothers. May I confess that Benny indeed is just a tiny bit spoiled, unlike his daddy. I will admit we are often lured in by Benny’s cute antics and we all adore him to pieces. Right now, I hear his youngest sister crooning to him as she fixes up a nest on the floor with a pillow, makes sure he has his guitar, and turns on his latest movie obsession. All in hopes that it will entice him to take a long winters nap, of course, but still, he has us all wrapped around his delicate fingers!
My Favorite Recipes In The Lizbet Cookbook
But first, a cookbook is kind of like a bible. You can tell by the cover whether it gets used a lot or just a little. My cookbook gets used everyday. I write in it, and I sticky-note the daylights out of it! When it was brand new, I slid it gently inside a gallon ziplock bag every time I used it. I handled it with the utmost care. Then life happened, and now it sports gravy splatters, icing globs, and a little bit of every thing else on its pages. But it is a happy, happy, happy book.
I will let you in on a delicious secret. My favorite recipes…wait for it…are all of them! Nevertheless, I will tell you a few that are my absolute favorite ones:
