Angel Eye Benny
He’s my Bubby. He has angel eyes that sparkle and shine. When his verbal skills to form actual words are not a part of his life, his eyes tell me many stories. He says exactly one entire word verbally. It’s MOM! It makes me feel all kinds of warm and fuzzy. Every morning when his amazing daddy gives him a bath, he asks right away, “Mom?” This kid melts me!
Back to the angel eyes and the tales they tell. I can read these eyes like they are a part of my soul. My God intended for Mothers everywhere to be able to look into their children’s eyes and feel them, whether they are special needs or typical. We just need to take the time from our daily grind, and see!
When they ask again for a cup of water, it is so easy to hand it to them quickly without ever looking into their eyes. I challenge us all as mothers to take a moment as we hand them their drink, to look into their beautiful eyes. I mean, who are we kidding, we all think we have the cutest kids on earth! It will change your hurried tone, your frustrated impatience, and your driven urge to hurry back to the laundry you were hastily folding when they demanded that 100th cup of water.
You’re sure by now they must have water coming out of their ears! How can one tiny human be so insanely thirsty?
I regret not taking those moments to look into the beautiful eyes of my girls when they were small. The times I did, though, I remember the feeling surge through me of endearment and joy to serve them in this small way. Too often I was that hasty mom, eager to get on to the next chore.
On to the eyes…
What do the angel eyes say?
Benny’s angel eyes tell me so many things.
Sometimes they say Mom, I don’t feel good today, don’t send me to school. Other times they dance and sparkle letting me know he is loving life to the max. But not when he’s going to school. Never then. When he sees he’s going off to school, his eyes are dreadfully sad. Oh, it is heartbreaking!
He tells me with one overwhelmed look when he is not impressed at the children lining up to stare. His eyes are saying,
“I don’t like when they stare, Mom, make it stop!”
“I know, Benny, I don’t like it either!” Insert the silent breaking of special needs Mom’s heart.
His eyes give me quick confirmation whether he likes a song or not.
“Mom I love this one, or, Mom, Mom, quick turn it off, the high pitched women’s voices hurt my ears!”
“The violin terrifies me, Mom, it’s much too loud and in my face,” say his panic-stricken eyes.
“A guitar is the sound of heaven, and drums are the bomb!”
I know this because Benny’s eyes dance with joy and he cups his ear with his hand to get every vibe and beat from these awesome instruments.
Benny’s eyes tell me whether someone has a good soul or not. Sound a little intimidating? No apologies, sorry, not sorry. This is Benny, I can’t change how he’s created, so we embrace it, and we get a free education every day about the goodness of the hearts we meet.
My ducks aren’t all lined up…
Because my ducks aren’t all in a row, sometimes I fail and get frustrated. The first thing Benny does is stop what he’s doing and look straight into my eyes. It’s like a dagger to my soul, making the blood rush through my veins, telling me I got caught red-handed. I am so thankful for his sensitive perception. Makes my belly get swirly’s every time!
Benny’s eyes love to see what we see. If we are looking at our phone, we hear him come scooting to peer at whatever we may be viewing. He loves watching babies giggle on youtube. With his daddy, he enjoys watching motorcycle fails. They both laugh loudly and carry on!
When Benny’s angel eyes see God.
Benny goes on the porch for his devotions, dragging his guitar along, his soulful eyes solemnly staring out over the green woods, or off into the azure blue, peacefully strumming his guitar. I’m convinced he has ministering angels cheering him on, and that God speaks to his soul. The voice of God whispers to Benny things of heaven and encouragement. He is one blessed little boy Benny.
My prayer for Angel Eye Benny…
Dear Benny, May God bless you and protect you, may he smile upon you and be gracious to you, may he show favor and bring peace and quietness to your soul. Amen.
